Dior: the house of dreams and iconic bags

23/09/2020
Beginning of July 2020, Dior publishes on his YouTube channel a presentation video for its winter 2020-2021 haute couture collection. The gentle music takes us to the riverbeds, to the heart of the forest and to the hollows of the trees, alongside the nymphs and naiads who, in this dreamlike universe, populate the Earth. They are naked, blissful, their nudity is their most beautiful feature. But the elegant wearers of the House of Dior present them with dresses, which they choose to wear to continue living their lives as beings of nature. Even nymphs prefer to wear dresses Dior rather than being naked.
The captivating video highlights the exceptional know-how of the House and the dream that it has been making us live ever since. 1946. A look back at the history of this Haute couture house exceptional and on the iconic bags which make it successful.

The history of the Dior house

The beginning of the 20th century saw a revolution in the fashion world: women freed themselves from their long corseted dresses and freed themselves from clothes that constrained their bodies. Pants are becoming more feminine, shirts too, dresses are more fluid.
The House of Dior is part of this modernity, of which it offers a new vision. Since its first collection, in 1946, Dior highlights the female silhouette, emphasizing women's shapes, marking the waist and neck line. The identity of the Maison is built in this modernized romantic and ultra-feminine vision.
Christian Dior, founder of the House, is an artist, who has always been involved in the world of art: he first worked as a gallery owner, selling the works of art of artists including no less than Picasso. During the Great Depression of the 1930s he entered the world of mode : forced to close his art gallery, he joined the workshop of Robert Piguet as a stylist, then Lucien Lelong, where he collaborated with Pierre Balmain. During the war, he continued to work to keep the French fashion industry active.
At the end of the war, Christian Dior, with the experience acquired from Parisian couturiers and driven by the desire to develop its own vision of fashion, launches its fashion house. His first collection, heavily criticized, nevertheless radically changed the fashion panorama in France. The story of Dior was born.
Thanks to the House of Dior, French haute couture continues to gain popularity and remains at the forefront of modernity and elegance. The House imposed its mark on the 1950s: the Dior silhouette was the reference silhouette.
Christian Dior died in 1957, bequeathing the House to the very young Yves Saint-Laurent, also a visionary. The famous stylists have succeeded in the artistic direction of the House: Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré – creator of the Lady, John Galliano, Raf Simons. From 2016, it is a woman who for the first time in the history of the House is the artistic director.
Maria Grazia Chiuri gave a resolutely feminist tone to the presentation of its collections – the spring summer ready-to-wear show 2017, during which she parades a t-shirt proclaiming "We should all be feminists" is one example. In 2018, it gives new life to the bag Saddle, created by John Galliano. It allows this it bag to meet a new breathtaking success.
Currently, the House of Dior offers a generously expanded catalog of bags. Worn by a few essential models, all of these bags are among the most beautiful on the market. Here is an overview – not exhaustive.

Iconic bags

The Lady

The most iconic bag from the House of avenue Montaigne is unequivocally the famous Lady. Its elegance makes itPrincess Diana’s royal accessory, who adopted it in 1995. It is in his honor that the bag is named Lady Dior. And this bag is a royal accessory! Its straight lines, its cane pattern, its short handles, everything is distinction and refinement.
The bag is regularly reworked and offered in new versions – the recent Lady D-Lite for example – as well as new materials and new colors. But the soul of the bag has remained the same and remains one of the most famous objects of desire in the fashion world.

The Saddle

Created by John Galliano in 1999, the Saddle was the flagship bag of the years 2000. Its short handle worn on the shoulder and its atypical saddle shape have made it a must-have. He has been back in force since 2018, so much so that some versions of the Saddle are presented as bags “to invest in without thinking”. The new version offers better quality and above all a removable and extendable handle, to carry the bag over the shoulder: the modern touch!

The Lady's heirs

Since the years 2010, the House of Dior welcomes within it numerous sophisticated models, worthy heirs of the emblematic Lady. THE Be Dior and the Never mind are variations of this tutelary model, presenting the same straight and elegant shapes.
THE shoulder strap models what are the Dioraddict, the Diorama or even the 30 Montaigne – named after the location of the famous boutique – are resolutely modern models, combining their precious materials with metallic details and chains.
The stylish look of these bags is created by the marriage between femininity and modernity, so dear to Christian Dior.

Miss Dior

Miss Dior is first and foremost a fragrance, created by Christian Dior in honor of his courageous sister Catherine, a resistance fighter during the Second World War. In the decades that followed, Miss Dior has become a range: clothes and shoes were born under this name. From 2011, Miss Dior is also a legendary bag: its cannage pattern underlines its kinship with the great Lady, and his channel confirms his resolutely rock approach.
